Shirley Frank Hughes, 85, of Dakota City, NE passed away on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at Regency Square Care Center in South Sioux City, NE.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, April 21, 2014 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in South Sioux City, NE with Father Paul Albenesius officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery in South Sioux City. Visitation with the family present will be held from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., with a rosary at 7:00 P.M. on Sunday, April 20, 2014 at the Mohr Funeral Home in South Sioux City, NE.

Shirley was born in Decatur, NE on August 27, 1928, the son of Harry and Calva (Farley) Hughes. He graduated from Decatur High School and attended Doane and Dana Colleges. He married Jeanette Sherlock on April 23, 1949 at St. Michael's Church in South Sioux City. He and Jeanette were one week shy of their 65th wedding anniversary.

Shirley worked at Old Home Bread and at Sioux City Brick and Tile.

In the 1950's he served on the City Council and as Mayor of Dakota City. He was a longtime member of the Dakota City Fire Department, charter member of the Father Tracy Council of the Knights Of Columbus and a member of the Fourth Degree Knights.

Shirley was a an avid hunter, fisherman, pool shark and storyteller. He made a solo plane flight at age 16 while his older brothers served in World War II. He was a long time member of the SSC Rotary Club, Siouxland Barbershop Chorus and Ducks Unlimited.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanette of Dakota City, NE; children, William (Barbara) Hughes of Layton, UT, Daniel (Deborah) Hughes of Plymouth, MN, Margaret (Gary) Brown of Escondido, CA, and Mary (John) Fee of Surprise, AZ; sisters-in-law, Shirley Hughes of Chula Vista, CA and Gladys Hughes of Carriere, MS; Josynne Sherlock of Omaha, NE; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Shirley was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Calva (Farley) Hughes; brothers Robert, Clint, and Hughie; and sisters, Mabel Hughes and Joyce Teeters.

Casket bearers will be grandchildren, Christopher Hughes, Angela Hughes-Gorka, AJ, Matt and Marcus Hughes, Garrett Fee, and Ryan Brown.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Friends of the Dakota City Library or the Dakota City Fire Department Building Fund.
