Like many of us after graduation, I went to work on road construction on I-29.  I followed that for two years until New Year's Eve, 1963.  A letter was waiting for me when I returned home that started "Greetings from your friends and Neighbors"...My draft notice.  by February 9, 1964 I was in the Army.  Ft. Leonardwood, MO; Ft. Knox, KY and Ft. Lewis, WI.

I spent about 1.5 years at Ft. Lewis.  It was there that I met my wife to be.  After discharge, I returned to Decatur and made application to become a State Trooper with the Nebraska State Patrol.  I graduated from the Patrol camp on May 27th as Probationary officer with the Patrol and was assigned to O'Neil, NE.  On the two weeks between graduation and starting the job I was married.  On may 28th, I left for Pacific City, WI.  The long distance was well worth the drive.  Penny Ann Burley became Mrs. Larry Uehling on June 3, 1966.

We spent 13 years at O'Neil where both our children were born.  In 1979 we were transferred to Norfolk and spent 7 years there.  We were then transferred to Scottsbluff.  After 4 years at Scottsbluff as a Lieutenant, we were again transferred.  This time to Lincoln as the Troop commander of Headquarters Troop.  After four years there, we decided to retire from the State Patrol and enjoy life.  We ended up in Missouri near our son, Kelly, his wife Pam and his two children.  My hobbies are competitive shooting, hunting and working with wood.  I like to build furniture and especially Jewelry Boxes. 

My wife, Penny, makes eclectic or funky bird houses as she calls them  We enjoy selling our items at craft fairs all over about 5 states.

1. Where I live.  I live near Savannah, Mo.  Move here from Idaho to be
near the Grandkids.

2. My wife's name is really Penelope Ann but if you don't wish to be
smacked, call her Penny.  She was born at Pacific City, WA. and went to
school at Auburn, WA.

3.  My best friend in the army dated Penny's best friend.  They set us
up on a blind date and two months later we were engaged.

4. I was a State Trooper in Nebraska.  I was stationed at O'Neill,
Norfolk, Scottsbluff, and Lincoln.  I ended my career in Lincoln as the
Troop Commander of Headquarters Troop at the rank of Captain.

5. I have attended College in nearly ever location we lived in.  I
studied at Northeast NE Tech at Norfolk 1 year, Chadron State 1
semester ,  UNL 1 semester and a Command and Management school at U. of
Texas at Dallas for just over 1 semester.

6. Penny was a stay at home Mom while the kids were growing up.  She did
some work at UPS as a delivery truck loader and for a time she sold Home
Interior and gifts thru home parties.

7. Boise, Idaho.  The hunting and fishing were wonderful.  There were
out door things to do every day, either up in the mountains, on one of
the many rivers, or out in the desert.  There were old mining
communities to explore.  The temperature was great.  Cool breezes every
evening, even if the day temp was 95.  You could sleep without AC.  The
coldest that I saw in 5 years was 8 above.  Nearly every day a long
sleeve shirt and a vest would keep you warm in the valley.  From our
living room window we could see the skiers at night with their torches
skiing down the trails up on the mountain.  It was just a neat place to
live with thousands of acres of public land to roam on.

8. We have two children.  Kelly, our son is 40 and lives in Kearney, Mo.
Our daughter, Shannon is 37 and lives in Austin Tx.

9.We have two grandchildren, both are Kelly's children.  Caitlyn is 13
and a delight to be around.  Cameron is 9 and is great company for
Grandpa in the shop.  He already knows how to run all the machines by
just watching.  His mind is like a sponge.

10.  My hobbies are looking for old woodworking hand tools to put back
to use.  To me it is amazing how the carpenters did things before power
tools.  The shop is much quieter and less dust with hand tools.  When I
have the time I will build with hand tools.

11.  I enjoy volunteering to do things for others.  I am the chairman
for the St. Joe Woodworkers Guild's toy program.  We will build from 500
to nearly 1000 wooden toys for a local program, Christmas Toys for Girls
and Boys.
I've done work for the St. Joe Parks and Rec. for the new Nature Center
on the Missouri River.  Plus several other smaller things for different
organizations.
